Need some friendly advice.

So i was playing pretty late on Wednesday night, and the screen went black and 2 red lights were flashing on my xbox - fantastic . Looked into ways of stopping the lights but the only way possible is to scratch the thermal paste off and reapply it. Well, i've had my xbox since release and the laser is also fucking up as it doesn't always read my discs, even when they are brand new (i know other people who's had this problem).

So i faced a question, should i A) Attempt to go inside the xbox and mess with it, B) Send it back to Microsoft and pay for repairs, or C) Buy a new xbox 360.

Well, considering the above factors, i'm just preventing the inevitable due to the laser is ready to burn out, and now i'm going to get a brand new xbox 360 elite.

After all that blur, my question to you is -

How the hell can i transfer my stuff across like saved games etc, or is the data all stored within your gamer profile - meaning you can transfer your game data ( achevos, avatar, saved games) that's linked to your profile my recovering the gamertag?
